A Special Christmas Card

A Masterpiece is Launched: The Dino Compendium

In previous posts you will have read of Dino 'Guru' Matthias offering up wisdom towards our restoration. Indeed Matthias Bartz from Germany is rightfully regarded as the worlds authority on the subject. It is with great pleasure that we announce the launch of his book which stands as the definitive source on all things Dino. Now everyone can have access to amounts of information never before available.

The doubters will fade but the mousehair won't. HVL dash material put to the test

When it came time to upholstering the dash we took the leap of faith (and followed the impeccable reputation of Henk at HVL Interiors) and covered it in his new reproduction mousehair. As outlined in an older post this material is a perfect reproduction to original with the advantage that it does not fade quickly in the sun the way the OEM material did.

A close friend of ours was more skeptical so he decided to put the material to the test. What better than on the dash of his pickup truck where he parked a piece of dash material for almost 3 months. Summer has been kind in Canada this year so it was exposed to sunlight for some 12-14 hours per day amplified by the effects of the windshield.

Today, upon inspection, the material was found to have not faded at all even after this less than scientific test of durability. Needless to say our friend is a believer and has decided to use it on his own car.

NOS Headlights may be a long lost re-union

NOS headlights were sourced from a gentleman in France and they will replace the tired units to come off of 01464. Upon opening the package we discovered original installation instructions and quality control tags dated February 1970. Now this may be a stretch but it is not outside the realm of possibility that these lights were manufactured in the same batch that was supplied to Ferrari when our Dino was made. Carello did not produce a lot of lights and this particular model has a fairly narrow application range so we may have just sourced the sibling light to those originally fitted to our car. Regardless it was a cool find and a very authentic addition to our restoration.

A little help from Sweden. The fuse panel is made

As so many stories begin with 01464 'At some time in the life of our car....the fuse panel was changed' In this case it was changed to a later North American spec fuse panel leaving us to make a new one from scratch .

The first step was to get phenolic board. This was achieved by the generosity of fellow car collector Randy P. and his company Paisley Products of Canada who supplied us with material. This was an easy request for Randy but he made sure to pull out some real old stock from the early 70's to make our panel totally authentic.

The next step was to measure an original panel and make a drawing. This is when some old IKEA furniture (thus the Swede influence) was sacrificed to make a jig that would hold the material while being placed in our milling machine. Material was cut to size and then covered in a self adhesive paper (used by sign makers to pre-mask decals) so that we could draw visible guide lines on. Of course measurements were checked many times and finally we got cutting.

The final result is nothing short of perfect. We are really pleased and look forward to building up the whole fuse panel just as soon as we re-plate all the mounting screws and relays.

More investigation: The three 'P's' of restoration.

When working on the engine and gearbox assembly we have come across the following materials

Smooth magnesium (Dow Dichromate finish)  - As used in early Dino cam covers, oil filler, and some other covers
Cast Iron (painted black)- As used in the engine block
Smooth cast aluminum (left unfinished)- As used on the main cover plate on the water pump side
Shiny pressure cast aluminum (left unfinished) - As used on the heads and intake manifold
Rough cast aluminum (painted silver)- As used in the gearbox and engine sump

While all of the finishes made sense to us, it was the painted rough cast aluminum that had us wondering. Was the silver paint original? and Why would Ferrari bother painting the aluminum? Some investigation work was needed.

To answer the first question we checked a number of cars and luckily had access to some NOS parts to look at. Upon inspecting we determined that without a doubt the parts were first painted and then received their finish machining to clean off all mating surfaces.

The second question then asked: 'why paint the aluminum?' Further investigation revealed that the surfaces that were exposed to engine oil were painted in a greenish zinc chromate primer. By VERY carefully removing original paint from our NOS casting we could see that there were traces of the zinc primer on the outside where it had been painted silver. This led us to conclude that the parts were painted all in zinc chromate primer, and then the outside surfaces were painted silver, followed by finish machining.

The question still existed as to 'Why paint in the first place?' The answer came with some research into the methods used to make the rough aluminum castings. These castings were made when molten aluminum was poured into sand molds which were later broken away to reveal the finished part. Because these were gravity castings with no pressure applied during the pouring or cooling stages, the molds were weaker than those found in pressure casting. These weaker molds can cause sand and other particulates to deposit themselves loosely on the final cast part. As such, manufacturers use the zinc chromate paint (which acts as a sealing primer) to seal the outer surface of aluminum and encapsulate any sand particles that could otherwise find themselves into the oiling system and damage the engine. The outside surfaces are merely painted silver to match the cast look of the aluminum.

It appears as though with these cars the detective work never ceases. You are either looking for People, Parts, or Processes.

The Distinguished Gentleman. Our Dino is re-united with its original salesman

Today was a very special day. For the first time in some forty years, our Dino was re-united with the salesman who sold the car new. It is with great pleasure that we introduce to you Mr. Scot Macdonald who is only a few days shy of his 90th birthday.   

This all came about when Paul caught wind that Scot was around and well living in a veteran’s home in Toronto. Some quick digging revealed his telephone number and it was not long before we had him on the phone and made arrangements to pick him up and have him visit 01464. Word spread of our plans and today we spent a marvelous day while many different owners and enthusiasts stopped by. In all there were 3 cars present that Scot sold including a 1977 Ferrari 308 GTB that the owner had the original sales card with Scot’s signature in it.  

Despite his age, Scot makes many 70 year olds look dated. He is sharp and lucid with a quick wit and excellent story telling ability. We were all enthralled with dozens of stories which included a cross country delivery drive of a BB512 that was traded in for a Daytona (that he then had to drive back), picking up a Countach in Texas and driving it back to Toronto, the day 3 Daytona spiders arrived and what he did to sell them, and the list when on and on. 

The weather was great and things could not have gone better. We offered Scot a drive when the car is done and look forward to fulfilling that promise. He also provided us with a piece of wisdom stating that because our heart is going into every nut and bolt of this car, that we will always have a connection to it that is not possible by just buying a finished product. That truly is what makes the restoration worthwhile.

Engine disassembly continues with even more shocking discoveries

As reported a few days back engine disassembly has begun in earnest with spades of poor workmanship and general lack of knowledge by the previous mechanic (and I use that term loosely) on display.

What we found today is nothing short of astounding and proof that some people should not even be given the responsibility to feed donkeys let alone work on high precision Italian sports cars. Behold the main oil pickup tube as we found it when separating the engine block from the oil pan.

At present all words fail me and I find it criminal that certain people continue to put out garbage labour like this. Luckily the engine is in the hands of an expert and we will be working together to make it nothing short of perfect.

Who does not like to get a package in the mail. When it is a wooden crate from Italy, the occasion is extra special. Yesterday we received the replacement body panels we required and they were quickly unwrapped and taken to the bodyshop for fitting.

Engine disassembly: The horrors of a $17K re-build

The last owner of our Dino was a well to do gentleman who placed his trust in a local mechanic to service his car. Having heard of the dangers of sodium filled valves, and not wanting to risk an engine failure, he commissioned this mechanic to a 'cost no object' re-build of the engine. This work was completed approximately 1000 miles before we bought the car at the extraordinary expense of just over $17,000.

During our pre purchase inspection, the engine ran ok and the compression and leak down numbers were acceptable (but certainly not to the standard of a fresh re-build). All of the receipts were in order, and we spoke to the mechanic in question, so this is not an issue of the seller trying to pull a fast one. Despite the previous owner thinking that he had gotten a professional job, we were cautious and knew that in short order a complete mechanical inspection of the engine was to come before it had our full faith.

Today the disassembly began and even we were not prepared for what was found. Having only gone as far as the removal of the heads, this is what we discovered:

- Valve clearances all over the place with no indication that they had ever been set. One valve had ZERO lash
- Timing chain tensioners that were seized
- Timing chains showed no sign that they were replaced and one was missing one of the circlips that holds the chain together
- Cams were out of time
- Plugs in head were wrong material and poorly installed
- Clutch return assembly was poorly assembled
- Gearbox drain plug butchered
- Cheap gaskets were used
- Some of the head studs were hand tight

These were merely the critical things, ignoring totally the concours correct details which were all wrong. All this for $17K when the owner said 'Don't cut corners. Make it right regardless of cost'. I shudder to think what the result would have been had a bargain been sought out.

Needless to say we will be making it not only right, but concours perfect. Once done the engine will be the envy of any Formula 1 paddock.

Improving airflow by tidying up sloppy work

In an earlier post we criticized the British for supplying lackluster vent fans for the interior cabin. Truth is that the Italians are not totally innocent here either.

Behold photos of the original assembly that feeds air to the upper vents on the dashboard. As you can see the Italians were quick to assemble components that really did not fit well together. The result is an air passage that was about 10-15% blocked.

Easily corrected with an air saw however we are not expecting a massive improvement in ventilation. Either way every little bit counts.

Koni USA Delivers. Original shocks returned as good as new

Today our long awaited shocks arrived from Koni USA. As we reported earlier in a previous post we discovered that 01464 was still fitted with its original shocks as delivered from Ferrari. These were sent to the classic division of Koni USA for re-building and restoration.

I must say that the service and finish was first rate. Not only were the shocks re-built but they were painted the original Koni red colour (much more orange in tone than the new shocks which are more red) and with the period correct decals. Anyone thinking of replacing their shocks should consider having them re-built by Koni USA. The wait time was almost 2 months but the price was less than the cost of a new set of shocks with a better paint finish and correct decals. Also the quality of packing was first rate.

Crazy Task #3: Painting in an invisible spot

It's been a while since we have profiled a crazy task but the insanity has not eased up a bit on our end. Here is a photo of Paul painting deep inside one of the balance holes for the engine's main pulley. During spray painting it was impossible to get paint properly in the bottom of the holes so we decided to go back with a brush to touch up the missed spots. 

Of course this is totally nuts as the holes are all bit invisible on the assembled engine but we don't call it a crazy task for nothing.

The gift of sound on a sad day.

Today the world remembers the founder of Apple Steve Jobs as his passing yesterday reminds all of us what a profound impact his ideas had on the way we live our lives today. You may be reading this blog on one of his devices and with the invention of the iPod and iTunes, he made music more accessible to the world.

On that note I decided to surprise Paul today with something I had been putting together for him as a surprise gift for several months. Yesterday the last piece of the puzzle came in the mail from Italy and with it completed the original audio system for the Dino. Front and center is the Voxson Stereo 8 radio and 8 track player. Voxson was an premium Italian radio manufacturer that was fitted to Ferrari's and some Maserati's in the early 70's. I was able to find an incredibly intact unit that still had all of the original wire ends and Voxson labelled fuse holder. When I opened the package I was astounded to the condition of the radio and all of its ancillaries. This includes a factory powered amplifier with outputs for the left and right audio channels.

The other item I sourced was an NOS Voxson antenna. Incredibly rare, these were often damaged and changed so to find a brand new unit was a real stroke of luck tied to a lot of creative persistence. It will adorn the rear flank of 01464 nicely.

Stay tuned for a future post where wiring schematics for iPod integration will be revealed. 8 tracks are great and all but we will be making provisions for modern digital music. Don't worry it will be 100% hidden and will not involve cutting a single wire.
